Why we don't need "The Next Tiger."

Rory, Jordan, Bubba...Who is going to be "The Next Tiger?" Who is going to carry Golf the way that Tiger in the early/mid 2000's? To me, I don't want or need another Tiger. Why is it that we always look for someone to replicate the greats we've watched in every sport. There will never be another Michael Jordan, another Tiger Woods, another Derek Jeter. Those guys were so unique in their on-the-field greatness, as well as their marketability. Just because they acted a certain way or competed a certain way, doesn't mean that it's the ONLY way to be legendary. I take this past weekend at The Masters as a prime example of how greatness is perceived and displayed. It doesn't make it any more or less fantastic to watch and appreciate, it only gives a variety to what "greatness" means.

Jordan Spieth (who is my new favorite golfer) is a 21 year old, mild-mannered kid who completely dominated Augusta this past weekend and everyone that was trying to catch him from his first drive on Thursday. As anyone who watches and appreciates Golf can tell you, his swing is pure, his chipping is spot on and he is as clutch of a putter as I've seen in a long time. He has all the physical tools to be great in this sport, but what he also has is a persona that people are going to gravitate to. He isn't showy and demonstrative like Tiger is. He goes about his business the right way and says all the right things. He is wise beyond his years. I just imagine what I was doing when I was 21 years old. As I am sure most of you were doing as well, I was getting excited to finally be able to show my REAL ID to a bouncer to get into a bar! This kid just won The Masters. Throughout the tournament, he continued to stay poised as adversity (not a lot) hit him. Shot after shot, putt after putt, it was remarkable to continue to watch his greatness.

For a few years now, since Tiger had his little "accident" with the SUV, the media has been pushing Rory on us as "The next guy." While Rory is an amazing young golfer, it seems as thought the media is trying to mold him into someone who is the newer version of Tiger. Why? Why can't we have someone who ISN'T like Tiger but still great? Yes Tiger was the best thing that has happened to Golf in a long time, but right now, it's Spieths turn to do it his way.

Golf is a game of precision, grace and mental fortitude. Jordan has all of the skills to carry golf into the future. I think we all need to appreciate and embrace the fact that Jordan Spieth is his own person, and is going to do it his way. He's a humble young man who has a burning passion to be great. He comes from a strong family and has positive role models to guide him. Let's let Spieth be Speith and enjoy watching him for years to come.

  1. Couldn't agree more. People need to stop comparing him to who is gonna be and take him for what he is. Jordan is an exceptionally gifted, humble young man. I will be cheering for him every single tournament.

  2. Great article. Golf doesn't need another Tiger, the sport will be fine w/o him. There are a lot of young golfers out there that young kids look up to and Speith is one of them.

  3. One main reason why Speith is also my new favorite golfer isn't because he is winning. It's how he carries himself, makes a huge out and a small fist pump is all he shows, and he's very humble. That's what people should strive for, to act like that. Not some showboat

  4. Nice Job Joe, hard not root for the kid. I've always had a hard time rooting for anyone else when Tiger is playing but I am beginning to warm up to the kid. I still have faith Tiger can win a few more tournaments and there is no doubt that after this weekend he still belongs. However, when the day comes that he walks, golf will be just fine.

  5. Golf will be fine, especially with the likes of Rory and Jordan winning and competing in the 4 majors. The reason I think everyone is look for the “next Tiger” is because Tiger brought in a whole new audience; he was a different color, played the game differently and hit golf shots that many people would not think of at that time. He stepped up on the biggest stages and won a lot. Whether it was chasing his put in vs Bob May in 2000, going head to head vs Ernie in the Presidents Cup or make “The Chip” in 2005. When he needed to perform he did, and everyone was watching when it happened also. Tiger brought casual golf fans to their TV’s for 4 hours on Sundays and had people driving hours to see him play. He really brought out those Happy Gilmore Fans that loved entertainment, and sports not just golf. Tiger was more than just a golfer.
This has all dramatically changed since Tiger’s magically run 10 years ago; players are stronger and more flexible, allowing them to do more with the golf ball then before. Fitness has become a major part of these players daily activities. In total the fields that are playing now are better athletes than the fields 10+ years ago.
Tiger will win again, but that is not the most important part for golf. It is more important that Tiger is playing and competing at a high level . Those casual fans and ones that became Tiger fans in the 2000’s will come right back to the TV’s and showing up in the gallery if he does so.

  6. Its all media hype they the media and us the watcher love drama, need drama especially in sports and golf.Do you think tiger wants another tiger or Mj another mj, DJ another DJ. I don't believe so the Media needs that comparison to exist. Gorden is good, maybe we should leave it at that. Besides he will never be jack...
